In the first few years of the iPad, companies released hundreds of different stylus that they claimed would make drawing and writing a breeze. In fact, they’re usually not much better than using your fingers.
That’s where the Apple Pencil comes in. Originally released in 2015, the Apple Pencil is a wireless stylus designed for the iPad. It’s not much bigger than a regular fountain pen, making it perfect for drawing and taking notes.
Ipad Accessories Are More Confusing Than Ever
There are now two versions of the Apple Pencil, each with its own design and features. Here’s everything you need to know about the Apple Pencil, what it does, and what kind of iPad you need to use it.
The Apple Pencil is a stylus — a pen designed for use on digital screens — that can do what your finger can, but with more precision. This means you can tap small icons, draw complex shapes and write in your own handwriting more easily.
For example, the default note-taking app on the iPad has a markup feature that lets you handwrite notes instead of typing them. Apple Pencil would be perfect here. If you have iPadOS 14 or later, you can even handwrite in any text field and have your words converted to typed text.
Art apps like Procreate and Clip Studio Paint feel like a whole new world when you have a good stylus for drawing—especially ones with pressure and tilt sensors. Also great for popular rhythm games like Pencil Osu! and VOEZ, which require the player to tap small buttons in time with the music.

This can be a good option when you don’t want to use your fingers normally — maybe you’re wearing thick gloves, or you have ink on your fingers. Apple Pencil can do what your finger can do.
Not all iPads support Apple Pencil. Even the Apple Pencil-compatible iPad doesn’t support either version—only one version of the Apple Pencil is compatible with any iPad.
The new Apple Pencil released in 2018 is compatible with all iPads that have a USB-C charger instead of a Lightning charger:
If you look at the two versions of the Apple Pencil, they look slightly different: the first-gen Apple Pencil was long and made of shiny plastic, while the second-gen was matte and had a flat surface. , so it won’t roll.

Of course, the two versions also have different prices — $99 for the first gen and $129 for the second gen
A key feature of the second-generation Pencil is double-tap: If you’re using an app like Photoshop Sketch that supports it, you can double-tap near the tip of the Apple Pencil to return to the previous tool. you used
Other than that, the only difference is how they charge and connect to the iPad, which we’ll cover below.
If you have a first-generation Apple Pencil, unscrew the cap on the “eraser” end to expose the Lightning connector, then insert it into your iPad. It will start charging immediately. If you’re asked if you want to pair with a Bluetooth device, tap Pair.

Ipad Apple Pencil: Compatibility, Features, How To Use It
The iPad and Apple Pencil are a great combination for those who want to take notes on the tablet screen. Here are all the ways you can start writing ideas quickly and easily
Apple’s tablets serve many purposes. For some, it’s a complete computer replacement, while others use it to watch videos, read books, and play games. Another popular use for the Apple iPad is as a replacement for a paper tablet and pen, or a sketchbook and pencil. There are a few different ways you can write down your latest thought or quickly draw an example of what you want to create on iPad.
To take notes with iPad, you need an iPad and an Apple Pencil that fits your iPad model. I’ll list which iPad models use which version of the Apple Pencil at the bottom of this article.
The easiest way to start taking notes on iPad with Apple Pencil is to open the Apple Notes app, tap the New Note/Compose button in the upper right corner, and start writing or drawing. You don’t need to select the Apple Pencil icon before you can start using it. The icon simply shows other tools that allow you to change the type of tool your Apple Pencil uses the ink color settings for, such as an eraser or a marker.

The Notes app recognizes handwritten text, allowing you to copy your handwriting as text, or if you switch to the pen tool with an “A,” your writing will automatically convert to text as you write. It’s very accurate, even with my terrible handwriting. In fact, any app where you use an Apple Pencil and see a pencil with an “A” on it can duplicate your handwriting.
To copy your handwritten note into text, long press until the first word is highlighted. Next, drag the highlight selector tool until all the text is selected, then wait for a menu to appear asking what you want to do with the selection.
It’s a hidden feature that I admit I often forget. You can use your Apple Pencil to start taking notes directly in Apple’s Notes app
