What Is Cortana On Windows 10
This post has been updated to reflect changes to Windows 10 and the Hey Cortana activation process.
Microsoft Is Rolling Out A Cortana Update With New Design On Windows 10
One of the big new features in Windows 10 is the addition of Cortana. For those unfamiliar, Cortana is a voice-activated personal assistant. Think of it as Siri, but for Windows. You can use it to get the weather forecast, set reminders, tell jokes, send email, find files, search the web, and more.
A feature that aims to make Cortana a staple of your Windows 10 experience includes the ability to summon the digital assistant using just your voice with the simple command “Hey Cortana.” There is only one thing, you have to enable additional features. Here’s how.
Now you can use your computer as you normally would, and whenever you need Cortana to do something, start by saying, “Hey Cortana,” then execute your command. I realized that you should continue your command after the activation prompt, instead of waiting for Cortana to load and show that it’s listening. Cortana is a personal productivity assistant in Microsoft 365 that helps your users achieve more with less effort and focus on what matters. The Cortana app in Windows 10 and Windows 11 helps users connect with people through Microsoft 365, check calendars, set reminders, add tasks, and more by using typed or spoken prompts to quickly access information. .
Your employees can use Cortana in the languages listed here. However, most productivity features are currently only enabled for English (US) for users with mailboxes in the United States.

Cortana requires a PC running Windows 10 version 1703 or later and the following software to successfully run scripts included in your organization.

Although all employees who sign in to Cortana need an Azure AD account, an Azure AD premium tenant is not required.

There is a wide set of policies that can be used to control different aspects of Cortana. Most of these policies limit Cortana’s capabilities, but do not disable Cortana. For example, if you turn off speech, your employees won’t be able to use the wake word (“Cortana”) to activate speakerphone or voice commands to easily call for help.
For Windows 11, Cortana is no longer pinned to the taskbar by default. You can still pin the Cortana app to the taskbar just like any other app. Also, the keyboard shortcut that used to launch Cortana (Win + C) no longer opens Cortana.
Your organization must have an Azure AD tenant and all your employees’ devices must be joined to Azure AD to get the best use of Cortana. (Users can also sign in to Cortana with a Microsoft account, but they won’t be able to use their corporate email or calendar.) What is an Azure AD tenant, how to integrate your devices, and more about Azure AD Services for information. , see the Azure Active Directory documentation.
Cortana Enterprise Services accessed through Cortana with Azure AD adhere to the same enterprise-level privacy, security, and compliance commitments as reflected in the Online Services Terms (OST). To learn more, see Cortana in Microsoft 365.

The wake word has been re-enabled in the latest version of Cortana on Windows. If you’re using Windows 10, version 2004, make sure you’ve updated to build 19041.329 or later to use your wake word with Cortana. For earlier builds, you can still press the microphone button to use your voice with Cortana.
Cortana only starts listening for commands or requests when a wake word is detected or the microphone button is selected.
First, the user should enable the wake word in Cortana settings. Once activated, a part of Windows called the Windows Multiple Voice Assistant Platform will start listening for the wake word. No audio is processed by speech recognition until two local wakeword detectors and one on the server side agree with high confidence that a wakeword has been heard.
Microsoft Separates Cortana & Search With Cortana Beta App In Windows 10 Build 18922
The first decision is made by the Windows Multi-Voice Assistant platform using hardware added to the user’s PC to save power. When the wake word is detected, Windows will display a microphone icon in the system tray to indicate that a helper program is listening.
At that point, Cortana will receive the audio recording, run a second, more accurate password detector, and optionally send it to Microsoft’s cloud service for verification by a third password detector. If the service does not confirm that the activation was valid, the audio will be discarded and removed from any further processing or server logs. Cortana will silently close on the user’s PC and the request will not appear in the conversation history because the request was rejected.
