Note: If you click “Skip” instead, you will be redirected to the Installation Assistant where you can purchase Windows 10 (see Figure 8).

When the download is finished, the installation of Windows 10 in a new VM on the Desktop will begin (Figure 3).

How long this process takes depends on the speed of your Internet connection and Mac. For me, at home and on a new MacBook Air, this took about an hour and 40 minutes.

When Windows 10 is installed, you will see a dialog about the installation of ® Toolbox, a separate product that is included in the Desktop (Figure 5).

After Windows 10 is installed, you should have all the updates, and there will probably be a lot (Figure 6).

At this point, you have a working installation of Windows 10 in a VM Desktop. You have not yet purchased Windows from Microsoft. Some features will be disabled until you do so. You can purchase and activate Windows from your Windows VM, and the whole process takes only a few minutes (Figure 7).

To start the process, select “New…” in the Desktop File menu, or click the “+” icon in the upper right corner of the Control Center window.

In this last case, start with the Setup Assistant dialog (see Figure 8 above) but choose “Transfer Windows from PC”. You will see the Windows Transfer dialog shown in Figure 14.

This process copies everything from the physical PC to the VM Desktop: apps, data files and Windows itself. The physical PC will not be repaired.

The most common method of transfer is through a network. The amount of time this will take depends on the amount of data on the PC and the speed of your network.

There may be multiple Windows PCs on your network, so you need to specify which PC you want to migrate to the VM. Do this by installing the transfer agent on the PC to perform the migration.

There are two computers involved in this transfer: the Windows PC you’re transferring, and the Mac Desktop you’re transferring. Some of the steps you’ll take to set up this transfer happen on a PC and some on a Mac, so you’ll have to go back and forth between the two computers to set everything up. These tasks are not complicated, as shown in this video:
