Do Verizon Iphone Have Sim Cards – DOJ investigates allegations that AT&T, Verizon and GSMA conspired to prevent customers from easily switching carriers [UPDATED]
The US Department of Justice has reportedly launched an antitrust investigation today to determine whether US carriers, including Verizon and AT&T, have encouraged consumers to easily switch wireless carriers.

AT&T, Verizon and the GSMA, an industry group that sets mobile standards, were asked in February for documents related to their efforts to block eSIM implementation. An embedded SIM, or eSIM, is a standard chip designed to replace a physical SIM card.
How To Activate An Esim On Every Major Us Carrier
With eSIM technology, you don’t need to change SIM cards when switching carriers, making it easy to switch from one carrier to another. The eSIM is designed to be compatible with all major carriers, regardless of network type.
The eSIM is a big change from physical SIM cards, requiring customers who want to switch carriers to switch providers to get a new SIM card. eSIMs make it easier for customers to switch carriers while traveling, and of interest to device manufacturers, they free up space currently occupied by SIM cards.
AT&T and Verizon are charged with setting GSMA compliance standards that would allow devices with eSIM technology to be locked onto their networks. Earlier this year, representatives of the two carriers attended a meeting of a private working group called GSMA North America and advocated for the ability to connect eSIM devices to a single carrier.
Verizon reportedly claims that phones on its network need to be locked to prevent theft and fraud.

At the heart of the investigation is whether America’s largest wireless carrier, G.S.M.A. In partnership with, covertly sought to influence mobile technology to unfairly maintain its dominance in ways that harmed competition and consumers and stifled innovation in the broader mobile industry. Together, AT&T and Verizon control 70 percent of wireless subscribers in the United States. A technology that makes it easier to switch carriers can lead to more churn and fewer subscriptions.
The Justice Department began its investigation months ago after receiving formal complaints from at least one device maker and one wireless carrier. The investigation may include carriers other than Verizon and AT&T.
AT&T, Verizon and other US carriers have long-term resistance features that will make it easy for customers to switch carriers at will without being tied to a specific network. For example, Verizon refused to allow Apple to offer Verizon service through the Apple SIM card built into the new iPad. Apple SIM is a multi-carrier SIM card designed to make it easy for users to choose a carrier after purchasing an iPad and switch to a new carrier while traveling.
Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other US wireless carriers are eSIM supporters. For example, Apple is said to want to use eSIM technology in its 2018 iPhones, but may opt for dual SIM technology because “some carriers are opposed to the idea.”

Apple has implemented eSIM technology with LTE connectivity in Apple Watch Series 3 models. eSIM is also a feature of the Google Pixel 2 smartphone and the Microsoft Surface.

For some, the iPhone 13 is their first Verizon 5G phone, so it’s no surprise they might want to get it in the fast lane. Unfortunately, over the past few days, I’ve been getting reports via email and social media (opens in a new window) that Verizon customers aren’t seeing 5G at all.
There is nothing wrong with your phone and it doesn’t need a software update. Based on what I know of the Verizon system, I have three possible solutions, all of which have to do with Verizon’s network delivery system.
GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile have a long tradition of knowing that their SIM cards are placed in random devices. Verizon, from a different culture, assumes a strong connection between the device and the SIM card. So sometimes the SIM card doesn’t work directly between Verizon phones.
Any Ideas Why This Happened? Bought It As Unlocked
This usually has to do with different flags for different features in the Verizon system. But the upshot of all this is that even if you have a 5G service plan, the SIM card in another device may not be able to meet your iPhone 13 needs.
There is a solution. If you bought a phone with a Verizon SIM card, you’ll need to use Verizon’s app or website to activate a new physical SIM card, use it, and then throw away the old one. If your phone didn’t come with a Verizon SIM card, call Verizon overnight to get a new SIM card or activate your phone via eSIM.
An ongoing Reddit thread (opens in new window) highlights another possible solution to the problem. Some people in the thread are working on their service with Verizon removing all the features from the account on the old sim and then adding them all one by one on the new sim.
Verizon’s system relies on having a database of specific phone IDs marked as “compatible.” Sometimes, some unit IDs may not end up in the database. This result in the network basically says “Who are you?” And a device offers limited service. A quick search shows that this has happened with both the iPhone 11 (opens in a new window) on Verizon and the iPhone 12 on Xfinity Mobile (opens in a new window), the latter of which is a wholesale Verizon customer.
Verizon Sim Card Not Working
In that case, use this online tool (opens in a new window) to check if your phone’s IMEI number is in Verizon’s database. Everyone agrees that US iPhone 13 models are approved and certified by Verizon, so missing one from the database is just an error. If it’s not in the database, that’s the problem. Call Verizon and explain the problem; A representative will need to submit a few forms to get it right.
